So What's The Big Deal With Worm Castings?
Unlike chemical fertilizers, worm castings (poop) are not only a source of plant nutrients, but actually help build soil and add valuable microbes that can be destroyed with application of non-organic fertilizers. The vermicomposting process has the added benefit of using food waste that would normally get thrown into landfills, creating a rich product that would otherwise be wasted. Research on worm castings has shown they have amazing potential for you to have healthier soil which leads to healthier plants.
Worm Castings:
- speed up germination
- suppress pests & pathogens
- increase organic matter
- improve water retention
- boost plant growth
- increase yields by 20 to 80%
How Much Do I Need?
Most studies show the greatest benefits occur when vermicompost makes up approximately 10% of the medium.
Plant Starts: When we plant starts in our garden we use 5lbs of castings for every 10 gallons of our soil starting blend. 5lbs is approximately 1 gallon of castings.
Transplants: We add a handful (1/2 to 3/4 cup) to the bottom of each hole, which we have found reduces transplant stress and establishes roots more quickly.
Mature Plants: We side dress our plants with 1-2 cups each after about 4 weeks, and then start worm tea applications at 2 week intervals.
